Despite a few last minute second-thoughts, I opted not to go to my former boss's retirement party. On Saturday night, I got thinking about it and I just couldn't foresee a scenario where I'd leave feeling glad I went.
I figured I'd go and be the only person from my "era" to be there, and spend the evening sitting by myself, watching the door for someone I knew to show up. Or I'd overhear stuff like "I can't believe he showed up!" Or I'd go there and I'd have to be reminded of something that still saddens me. (Or I'd end up making some snide remark about certain topics and feel like a jerk for doing so.)
Around 7:00, I was like "Damn...maybe I should just get ready and go", just to see who I would see and maybe catch up a little but, but figured by the time I washed my hair, shaved and got dressed, I'd have talked myself out of it again.
There's a part of me that wishes I went, and wishes Carmen well on his retirement. But there's a part of me that is thinking it's better I didn't.
In the end I stayed home and watched the Royal Rumble. It wasn't a bad Rumble, although there have been better (1988 and 1992 spring to mind). Just be glad I like C.M. Punk, otherwise his five or six minute stint of preaching, eliminating, preaching, eliminating would have gotten a thumbs down from me.
The Great Khali-Beth Pheonix elimination sequence was kinda cute. Michael's elimination of Triple H and his reaction after his own elimination certainly poses some questions that could be answered on Raw tonight.
And what's interesting is that earlier on in the evening, I was thinking "I wonder if Edge will make a suprise appearance?" Well, much like Cena a couple of years ago, there's Edge as not only a shocker of an entrant but the winner.
I actually thought the Rumble really got interesting after Michaels was eliminated. With him being the favourite (so as to face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania), once he was gone, it was Cena, Batista and Edge, and all seemed like they could win it and headline Wrestlemania.
I don't see Edge vs. Sheamus headlining Wrestlemania (although looking back, would you put King Kong Bundy in a Mania main event, even against Hogan?) so you gotta figure Edge will challenge the Undertaker. We have to assume DX will fall apart over the next couple of months...but what if it doesn't? Sure, the veering from Michaels - Taker II to Michaels-Triple H is the kind of swerve that proves "anything can happen" and keeps smarks and marks alike on their toes...
BUT..
Who's to say Undertaker is champion in two months? Who's to say Michaels doesn't cost the Undertaker the title at Elimination Chamber (or whatever the February pay-per-view is). Taker, good and pissed, is now only too happy to battle Michaels at Wrestlemania.
However, were I a betting man (and technically, as of a couple of weeks ago, I am - so I guess it's better to say "If you could bet on wrestling") I'd lay odds these are your key Wrestlemania matches:
Cena vs. Sheamus
Edge vs. Undertaker
Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels
But wait...(GASP!) whatever will become of poor Hornswaggle?
And just to have fun...here's your undercard
Randy Orton vs. Legacy
Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart (possibly with the Hart Dynasty involved)
Chris Jericho vs. The Big Show
Comment Update: So two people have taken the poll, but yet no one has left me any comments. I have to assume people just randomly stop by, take the poll, don't read a thing I write here and then move on.
Hmm..perhaps there are some interesting blog entries in my future.
