Why Don't You All Just FFFFF-ade Away!

A couple of days ago, I was finally able to pick up the "Pirate Radio" soundtrack. Two discs of songs from the mid-60s, most of which appear in the movie about...well, a pirate radio station during the mid-60s. (Oh, and there's a David Bowie tune "Let's Dance" tacked on at the end of Disc #2, not sure why since it's not from the era or the movie, but it's a good tune. Trivia: the late Stevie Ray Vaughn played guitar on the tune.)

Actually, Pirate Radio features a lot of great guitar heroes including Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton (as part of Cream on "I Feel Free"), Jimmy Page (session guitarist on the Kinks "All Day and All of the Night"), Jeff Beck (on "Hi Ho Silver Lining"), Jimi Hendrix (on "The Wind Cries Mary") and Pete Townsend (on the Who's "I Can See for Miles" and "My Generation").

It's the later guitarist, group and song I want to discuss here.

Have you ever really listened to the first half of My Generation? Not only does lead singer Roger Daltrey not really sound like himself, but who are the back-up singers? They sound like generic male singers, bearing no resemblance to the Who. One need only listen to the last 30 seconds of the song, as guitarist Pete Townsend repeats "Talkin' 'Bout My Generation" over and over again for reference. Unless bassist John Entwhistle and drummer Keith Moon completely drown out Townsend during the initial choruses, I wouldn't be suprised to learn that's not really the Who doing back-up vocals.

Anyone else want to weigh in on "Who" is singing background vocals on "My Generation"?
