For example, this particular update I'm stealing from my old Vox Blog where, last January, I (semi-jokingly) made my predictions for what my Facebook statuses (stati?) would be over the course of 2009. Let's see how close I was.
->John is wondering about having a joint 40th birthday/Jack’s 1st birthday party. Is six months long enough for people to get their excuses for not showing in?
Well...I did try and have a birthday party of my own. Of course, by the time mid-July rolled around, I didn't feel much like celebrating. Maybe I'll do better when and if I plan my "25th Annversary of Being A Wrestling Fan".
->John is breaking in his new laptop. New technology is fun.
I did get a new laptop and once I got used to it, it's worked out pretty well. (He says just before Windows Vista crashes!)
->John is kiddin’ his Dad over how Tony Stewart finally won Daytona.
Matt Kenseth won. Odds are Dad and I will both be cheering Mark Martin this Valentine's Day.
->John wonders what Wrestlemania XXVI will be like with no Undertaker streak to talk about. (Sorry, but I was cheering for Shawn Michaels the whole time.)
Turns out, not only did Undertaker retain the streak, but I didn't even watch Wrestlemania.
->John wonders if he did a good but not great action movie and then OD’d if he’d get an Oscar, too.Yeah, Heath Ledger won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Considering Robert Downey Jr. was also nominated for Tropic Thunder in the same category, it wasn't exactly a strong year. Still want to know why, when actors OD, it's a tragedy. When wrestlers OD, it's a commentary on how screwed up the industry is.
->John can now reveal that U.S. President Barack Obama visited GDLS-C this morning and I got to shake his hand.
And now I can reveal that...Obama never came within 50 miles of London, much less GDLS-C. Some Saudi Prince did, though. I still figure if Harper can come to the plant, Obama can.
->John is sad that Corner Gas has ended…but loved the finale.
I was sad to see Corner Gas finish, but the finale was pretty good.
->John can’t believe that’s how the Office season finale ended. Can’t Pam and Jim just be happy for once? It’s a comedy, not a romantic drama.
The season finale of the Office was fun, and Pam and Jim were very happy. Not too sure about Season 6, mind you, but Niagara was good.
-> John can’t believe Canada has called another election. Is this going to be a yearly thing now?
There was no election this year...although they hinted at it over the summer. So I was close.
->John just turned 40. If anyone needs me, I’ll be sitting here with a gun in my mouth.
I turned 40. I did not sit around with a gun in my mouth. As I recall, I spent much of it hanging out with my family, so that was a pretty nice way to spend my birthday.
->John needs people to know he was kidding about the whole "gun in my mouth thing".
I think even if I had jokingly posted the "gun in my mouth" thing, I would have had to post the above retraction.
->John joins the rock world in mourning the death of Keith Richards…about 15 years after he expected it to happen.
Keith Richards is STILL alive. Turns out it was Michael Jackson who died. As I believe I mentioned to some when it happened...kind of shocking until you really sat down and thought about it.
->John is intrigued to note his friend’s list just topped 200. Do I actually know 200 people?
Actually, I ended up editing a LOT of my friends list, to the point, I went from something like 160 to 60. Sorry for those I cut, but a lot were people I never really heard from anyways. To be honest, I could probably whittle that list down to 20 people, and still not be sure what's keeping me on Facebook.
->John is having an Office marathon to prepare for the Season 6 season premiere.
I didn't have an Office marathon, but I do recall watching some of Seasons 4 and 5.
->John can’t believe it’s a Brewers – Twins World Series.
And the reason I couldn't believe it, because it didn't happen. The Yankees defeated the Phillies in a match of one team that's won 546 World Series titles against last year's winners.
->John is heading to Best Buy to get the China Beach DVD.
Sadly, my favourite 1980s TV drama about medical staff in Vietnam still has yet to make it to DVD. I do have all the episodes on VHS from when they aired them on History Television back in 2002.
->John wants everyone to go to their local book store and grab a copy of his book.
Of all the things on this list that didn't happen, this is the one I regret the most. I will say, however, I sent out quite a few queries to agents (to no avail) and over the holidays, I've gathered up a list of agents that I will be contacting over New Year's weekend. And having read Nick Hornby's Juliet, Naked on Christmas Day, I have an idea for another novel. Perhaps 2010 will be the year I get published.
Come back soon for my "predictions" and resolutions for 2010.
