There's many things I don't understand about the crazy, sometimes frustrating world we live in. I'm sure that over the course of future postings, I'll touch on a few of them...
Oh, who am I kidding? I won't simply "touch" on them. That implies I'll devote a sentence or two to them, and then move on. Instead, I'm more likely to take some inane point I want to make, and then write several hundred more words on the topic than any sane person could possibly give a crap about.
Today is one of those days.
There seems to be a lot of backlash against the actress Megan Fox, and I'm not sure why. I don't think her role in Transformers was exactly Oscar-worthy and while I'd like to see Jennifer's Body, I'm not exactly going to rush to theatres to see it. Having said that, I don't know that she's any more annoying a celebrity than any other Flavour of the Month actress that looks good in whatever she's wearing, makes a couple of films and then disappears into the woodwork.
And therefore, I'm not sure where this backlash is coming from. There's a local radio station where someone bet one of the announcers he couldn't find one good thing to say about Fox. The penalty for failing to do so was that he could no longer discuss her on air. Apparently, there was recently a media-wide one-day ban on any Megan Fox-related news stories, during which most of the media discussed the fact that there was a one-day ban on Megan Fox-related stories.
Now, while I like the idea of a media ban (even if just for one day) on any of the multitude of useless celebrities whose only claim to fame is having large breasts (or in Kim Kardashian's case, buttocks) being the vapid offspring of someone who really accomplished something, or having their own reality TV show, I'm just not sure why the media decided to single Ms. Fox out.
I mean, is Megan Fox really any more worthy of backlash than say Paris Hilton, Jon and Kate or Britney Spears? For the first year after seeing Jessica Simpson appear on the cover of magazines week in and week out, I had no idea why she was famous, save for getting divorced. Come to think of it, why IS she famous? (She was in the Dukes of Hazard remake and Employee of the Month...but does that really count as an accomplishment?)
But back to the topic at hand, after years of seeing reality TV, entertainment magazines and the Internet cram pseudo-celebrities down our throat with no real substance save the ability to lead the sheep to their TVs, why did the world of celebrity decide that Megan Fox was the breaking point?
I'm sure there are people who will say "Well, she's got a bit of an attitude" or "She's been in some crappy movies" or "She's got dumb-ass tattoos". To which I say, "what makes her different than any of the others?"
Hell, reality TV lives and dies by just how obnoxious their "stars" are. Britney Spears made "Crossroads". The entire left side of the Roc...er Dwayne Johnson's body is tattooed. And really, how many times do we have to see the on-again, off-again battle between Britney Spears and her sanity, or try to figure out what Paris Hilton's claim to fame is, save that every time she steps outside, the paparazzi cameras light up? Seriously, if she was named Paris Smith, would anyone really give a sh!t?
I'm no Megan Fox fan, but I don't think she's the worse excuse for a celebrity in the 21st century.
